All you need to know about UNTH Foundation Endowment Fund

Welcome! We are excited to present our endowment fundraising communication pamphlet, highlighting the overwhelming need and how you can contribute to the growth and success of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) and its Foundation as a foremost tertiary public healthcare institution. By establishing an endowment fund, we aim to secure a sustainable future for our institution, enabling us to provide unparalleled cost-effective, quality, available, and accessible tertiary and primary healthcare services for our people.

What, How, and Benefits of the Endowment Fund

The UNTH Foundation Endowment Fund is a financial vehicle established by the UNTH Foundation as a not-for-profit institution aimed at supporting the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) to provide affordable and quality healthcare services. As with many prestigious public institutions as charitable foundations, the primary goal of our endowment fund is to raise and preserve dedicated funding that will be used by the Foundation to continuously support healthcare service delivery, training, and research, such as the procurement of hospital equipment, the expansion of departmental infrastructure and services, research, personnel training and exchange programs, grants, or other designated activities that align with the objectives of the foundation, the mission of UNTH, and the expectations of the donors. The Endowment Fund is structured to play a crucial role in ensuring long-term healthcare service delivery viability and impact in the South East geopolitical zone and across Nigeria as a whole. It is managed by professional investment managers and/or financial institutions with the mandate to achieve growth and stability. The funds are to be invested across a diversified portfolio of assets and other financial instruments to generate returns over the long term and establish a sustainable and reliable source of funding for the foundation initiatives, ensuring long-term success and impact. And as with many other endowment funds, 70% of all funds raised will be held in perpetuity, meaning they will be preserved and invested to generate income year after year, ensuring sustainable funding for the designated purposes, while 30% of the raised funds and annual income from the invested funds per annum will be plugged into the immediate support by the Foundation for healthcare service delivery programs in UNTH and across the South East.

How the Endowment Fund is to Impact Public Healthcare at UNTH and Across the South East

Your donation to the endowment fund will make a significant impact on public healthcare in the following ways:

  1. Supporting healthcare facilities and infrastructure: The Endowment Fund is designed to improve and support the expansion of UNTH 500-bed inpatient wards (currently spread across 30 wards), and the surgery and anaesthesia services facilities have 16 theatres spread across the hospital, with 10 main theatre complexes and 2 cardiothoracic, accident/emergency, and eye theatres, respectively. These funds will be invested in supporting the renovation, expansion, and construction of new buildings, purchasing state-of-the-art medical equipment, or upgrading existing infrastructure so as to further enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide quality, cost-effective, and available healthcare to the public.
  2. Funding medical and biomedical research: The endowment funds will support medical research initiatives, enabling the development of new treatments, cures, and innovations in healthcare. The fund will provide resources for the hospital, university, and other relevant stakeholders to conduct groundbreaking studies and trials. This is to help advance public healthcare knowledge, improve patient outcomes, and foster healthcare-related entrepreneurship.
  3. Enhancing community health programs: The Endowment Fund will support community health programs that address specific public health challenges. It will be used to develop and implement initiatives related to disease prevention, health promotion, and healthcare access for underserved populations and indigent patients. It will improve public health outcomes, reduce healthcare disparities, and ensure that everyone has equal access to quality, cost-effective, and available healthcare services.
  4. Funding healthcare personnel capacity building, scholarships, and fellowships: The endowment fund will also support capacity building initiatives, exchange programs, scholarships, and fellowships for healthcare professionals at UNTH and across public healthcare institutions in the South East, such as doctors, nurses, and researchers. The fund will provide financial aid to cover tuition fees, support research projects, or fund clinical training. This is to further help attract and retain talented healthcare workers, ensuring a skilled workforce and improving the overall quality of healthcare services.
  5. Sustainability and resilience: The endowment fund is designed to support UNTH with a stable and reliable source of income for public healthcare services. The foundation’s goal is to be able to contribute at least 10% of the hospital infrastructure, projects, and research funding needs in the next 3 years and 30% in the next 6 years through the endowment fund’s and grant-driven initiatives. This is to enhance the hospital’s financial stability and ability to plan for the long term, expand their services, and navigate economic uncertainties.
  6. Collaboration and partnerships: The endowment fund will encourage the Foundation and UNTH to collaborate and partner with the relevant state and non-state public healthcare and research institutions and philanthropic entities to tackle complex healthcare challenges more effectively.

Your contribution continues to benefit public healthcare services and development long after you have made the donation.

Instead of a one-time impact, your donation becomes a long-term investment in the foundation’s mission and work.
  5. Support financial stability for the foundation: The Endowment Fund is structured to provide a stable and reliable source of income for the foundations. By contributing to the endowment, you are helping to ensure the financial sustainability of the foundation.
