UNTH Foundation Supports Hospital Environmental Clean-up Exercise: Taking Steps Towards a Greener Healthcare Facility
In an effort to ensure a healthier and more sustainable environment at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), The foundation and the hospital, with funding support from the foundation’s diaspora group, organised an environmental clean-up exercise at the hospital. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable practices within the healthcare facility.
The clean-up exercise brought together hospital staff, volunteers, and community members who share a passion for environmental conservation. Participants were equipped with gloves, t-shirts, trash bags, and cleaning supplies as they ventured into various areas of the hospital premises to collect litter, debris, and other waste materials.

Throughout the exercise, attendees were guided by environmental specialists and waste management experts who provided valuable insights on proper waste disposal protocols and recycling initiatives. Moreover, educational sessions were conducted to highlight the potential impact of medical waste on the environment and the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices.

By actively involving staff members from different departments, the clean-up exercise fostered a sense of responsibility and ownership towards maintaining a clean and healthy hospital environment. It emphasised the fact that everyone has a role to play in preserving our surroundings and reducing the hospital’s ecological footprint.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, UNTH Foundation intends to continue to support and expand its eco-friendly initiatives to minimise waste generation and promote energy conservation. These initiatives include:
Proper Disposal of Medical Waste: The hospital promotes adherance to guidelines and regulations for the safe disposal of medical waste, ensuring that it does not pose a threat to public health or the environment. And the Foundation, as part of its ongoing support, provided a number of waste bins across the hospital’s wards and environs.

Other planned initiatives in the future are to put in place recycling initiatives that will be stationed throughout the facility, making it easier for staff, patients, and visitors to recycle materials such as paper, plastic, and glass. Installation of low-flow faucets and toilets and promotes awareness of water conservation practices among staff and patients, as well as upgrading the hospital lighting systems to energy-efficient LEDs and installing motion sensors in rooms and hallways to reduce electricity consumption.
By organising the hospital environmental clean-up exercise, the UNTH Foundation facilitated a proactive step towards creating a greener and healthier healthcare facility for both our patients and the community. Through this event, we aimed not only to raise awareness but also to inspire lasting behavioural change among staff members and visitors.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and partners who made this initiative a resounding success. Their dedication and enthusiasm demonstrate their commitment to promoting sustainability within our hospital and beyond.
Moving forward, the foundation will continue to prioritise environmental initiatives, working towards becoming a role model for sustainable healthcare practices. We believe that by embracing eco-friendly policies and encouraging individual responsibility, we can facilitate the creation of a healthier and more sustainable future for public healthcare.
