Why We Unveiled UNTH Foundation by CMD

The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, in Enugu State, inaugurated a 14-member UNTH Foundation on March 8, 2022, as part of its initiative to build institutions that facilitate access to quality, affordable, and accessible public healthcare services at UNTH, in the South East, and across Nigeria.

The hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Obinna Onodugo, stated at the unveiling of the foundation’s board of trustee members under the chairmanship of His Excellency, Sullivan I. Chime, CON. that UNTH was facing difficulties with its infrastructure, medical facilities, staff training, and welfare, among other things.

He stated that one of the biggest challenges of the hospital was the large number of indigent patients who could not afford to pay their bills, stressing that the development was restricting the hospital from settling for supplies of consumables and medications in the treatment of such patients. And that the hospital, which had spent over 25 years in its present location, was faced with irregular water supply, energy supply, poor condition of wards, an inadequate number of wards to cater for the increasing number of patients, and an irregular supply of consumables.
