About the Lecture
Blood sustains life through a remarkable equilibrium: remaining fluid enough to circulate freely, yet capable of clotting swiftly when bleeding threatens life. Drawing on her body of research and publications, Professor Nwagha’s inaugural lecture explores this delicate haemostatic balance, tracing the perilous journey from inadequate clotting to pathological thrombosis. It examines advances in managing haemophilia, von Willebrand disease and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), including World Federation of Haemophilia humanitarian-supported prophylaxis. It also considers strategies to prevent Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) through hospital-wide risk assessment and thromboprophylaxis, while examining hypercoagulable states associated with pregnancy, cancer, and uterine fibroids. Ultimately, the lecture brings together scholarship, clinical insight, and institutional experience to show that restoring the balance of blood fluidity, from bleeding to clotting, is fundamental to patient safety, survival, and a stronger culture of care.
About the Lecturer
Professor Theresa Ukamaka Nwagha is a distinguished Nigerian haematologist whose career has been marked by pioneering leadership, clinical excellence and a sustained commitment to advancing the understanding and management of bleeding and thrombotic disorders. At the University of Nigeria, she became the first woman to serve as Chair of Haematology and Immunology at the College of Medicine and the first Deputy CMAC at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. As a pioneer in laboratory and clinical management of haemostatic disorders, she directs the Southeast Haemophilia Treatment Centre and serves as Vice President Medical of the Haemophilia Foundation of Nigeria. Her influence extends internationally through leadership roles in the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, including co-chairing its DIC Subcommittee and helping establish the ISTH online Women’s Health Hub. With over 144 indexed publications and more than 1,000 citations, Professor Nwagha continues to advance research, public health advocacy and medical mentorship across Sub-Saharan Africa.
